I Just Fall in Love Again

First recorded by The Carpenters (1977).
Also recorded by Dusty Springfield (1978).
Hit version by Anne Murray (US #12/C&W #1/UK #58/CAN #1 1979).

From the wiki: “‘I Just Fall in Love Again’ was written by Larry Herbstritt, with co-writers Steve Dorff, Harry Lloyd, and Gloria Sklerov. It was first recorded by the Carpenters and later covered by Dusty Springfield, whose arrangement inspired Anne Murray to record her own cover.

“The Carpenters’ arrangement was included on the duo’s 1977 album Passage. On the Carpenters’ official web site, Richard Carpenter notes that he felt the song was perfect for his sister Karen’s voice and felt their version had hit-single potential. However, A&M Records decided not to release it as a promotional single because it was considered too long for Top 40 radio stations to play at the time and could not be abridged.

“Dusty Springfield recorded in summer 1978 and released it in early 1979 on her Living Without Your Love album the same week her record label, United Artists Records, was sold. The track was subsequently never released as a single and went largely unnoticed by the listening public due to lack of promotion for the album in the wake of the company sale.

“Canadian country singer Anne Murray was unaware Springfield had already recorded ‘I Just Fall in Love Again’ just 6 months prior. Springfield was one of Murray’s favorite singers, and she has said ‘If I had known (Springfield) had released it as a single, I never would have recorded it.’ Murray’s arrangement was released on her 1979 album New Kind of Feeling, and also released as the album’s promotional single. It topped Billboard magazine’s Country and Adult Contemporary charts for three weeks, while reaching #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart.”
