From the wiki: “‘Hurt’ was written by Jimmie Crane and Al Jacobs, and was first recorded by Roy Hamilton (‘Unchained Melody‘, ‘Don’t Let Go‘), whose version peaked at #8 on the R&B Best Seller chart and spent a total of seven weeks on the chart.

“The song is considered to be the signature hit of Timi Yuro, whose version peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. But,

‘In 1964, Little Anthony and the Imperials recorded a version on their album, Goin’ Out Of My Head. When released as a single, two years later, it reached #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. In 1967, the Italian singer Fausto Leali had a personal triumph with a recording entitled ‘A Chi’ (‘To whom’), topping the Italian music chart that year.

“In 1976, Elvis Presley covered the song. Presley’s version reached #28 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #7 on Billboard’s Easy Listening chart, #6 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart, and #37 on the UK Singles Chart. Presley sang the song on stage 159 times, usually performing it with a reprise. In three of these instances, in Birmingham AL, Pittsburg, PA and in Chicago IL, Presley would end his performance by going to the floor intentionally while simultaneously delivering a seven second uninterrupted note.

“In 1976, The Manhattans also covered the song in their album The Manhattans. Their version reached #10 on Billboard’s R&B chart, and #4 on the UK Singles chart. In 1981, Carly Simon covered the song on her Torch album and released ‘Hurt’ as the album’s only single with no apparent chart impact.

“Juice Newton’s cover charted highest of any single when it reached #1 on the Billboard Country Singles chart in 1985.”
